Discovering Harlem
Recently I was in New York City for the annual Les Dames d'Escoffier conference and was fortunate to be invited to a very special brunch in Harlem at the Red Rooster.
The Red Rooster is a popular restaurant located in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. It was founded by chef Marcus Samuelsson in 2010 and has since become a popular destination for its modern take on classic American and African-American cuisine. The restaurant is known for its fried yardbird (chicken) and its signature dishes such as the Red Rooster Fried Yardbird, the Chicken and Waffles, and the Shrimp and Grits. The restaurant also features a bar and a lounge, and hosts live music and other events. It is located at 310 Lenox Ave, New York, NY 10027.
"Sing Harlem" is a phrase that likely refers to the rich history of music and performance in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Harlem has long been a center of African American culture and has played a significant role in the development of various musical genres such as jazz, blues, and hip-hop. Throughout the 20th century, Harlem was home to many famous clubs and venues where musicians would perform, and it continues to be an important hub for music and entertainment today. Some famous musicians and performers who have called Harlem home include Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and James Brown, among many others.
Sing Harlem is also the name of an extraordinary group of singers that performed for us at the Red Rooster, and are often at the Red Rooster's popular Sunday brunches as well. I can't wait to go back to Harlem and learn more about this vibrant part of New York City.
